Nichols College Students Inducted into Honor Societies

DUDLEY, Mass.—Nichols College recognized on April 30, 2019, the following students with their induction into the College’s and national honor societies. The seniors will graduate at the College’s May 11 Commencement at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass.

Political Science Professor Erika Cornelius Smith, Ph.D., presided over the general ceremony.

“I feel privileged to be an advisor to Zeta Alpha Phi—not just because of the achievements of our outstanding student inductees—but also because ZAP is unique to Nichols College. We are part of something very special, a Bison legacy,” said Dr. Cornelius Smith, who serves as faculty advisor to ZAP. And, working with our ZAP student president, Jared Maymon (junior finance and economics major from Coventry, R.I.), and board members, we hope to increase the visibility of these truly terrific students next year.”

PHI ALPHA THETA INDUCTEES

Phi Alpha Theta is a national honor society dedicated to recognizing high student achievement in the study of history.

“As new members, inductees will be expected to live up to the ideals of Phi Alpha Theta, keeping in mind the three important forces contained in the words Philia, Anthropos, Theos – Love, Humanity, God,” said Nichols College History Professor Paul Lambert Sr., faculty advisory to Phi Alpha Theta. “The ideals of this society are based upon the invaluable lessons that we believe may be learned from the study of History. Those ideals include: a spirit of respect for the right of each individual to freedom of thought; a belief that all humankind forms a community that includes people from every nation, race, religion, and culture; and a love of truth, which guides us in our endeavor to study the past.”

ALPHA PHI SIGMA INDUCTEES

Alpha Phi Sigma is a national honor society for students in criminal justice promoting academic excellence, community service, educational leadership, and unity.

“The Honor Society Induction is a chance to recognize the students who are what we want them to be—outstanding students,” said Boyd P. Brown III, Nichols College assistant professor of criminal justice management, faculty advisor to Alpha Phi Sigma. “But, beyond that, these are young men and women whose contributions and efforts extend beyond the classroom. They are our student leaders. They are involved in the campus and their local communities. They represent the best of us.

“For me, personally, it is also an opportunity to take pride and satisfaction in the hard work my colleagues and I put in,” added Professor Brown. “This event helps to remind me that what we do can and doeshave an impact on our students.”

CHI SIGMA MU INDUCTEES

Chi Sigma Mu is the honors society for the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA). It is open to bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral students who achieve academic excellence in their coursework. Students are nominated by a faculty member.

COSMA awards accreditation to the top sport management program in the United States, based on their academic programming, holding true to their college’s mission, the faculty accomplishment, student work, and program successes. Three years ago, Nichols College was recognized as one these high-performing sport management programs.

“We recognize and celebrate the academic accomplishments of two Nichols College sport management students who are active on campus, have exceeded at their internships sites, and specific to this induction, excelled academically—Sarah Williams and Courteney White,” said Tim Liptrap, Ed.D., chair and associate professor of Nichols College’s sport management program.
